Blessings in a Backpack mobilizes communities, individuals, and resources to provide food on the weekends for school-aged children across America who might otherwise go hungry.
Did you know nearly 300,000 kids living in Chicagoland are food insecure? That is one in seven kids who eats meals at school during the week but is without affordable, healthy food on Saturday and Sunday. The consequences are much more than a growling stomach. Hunger can cause many physical health problems. It can shorten a child’s attention span, lower their IQ, and keep them from making good grades.Their mission is simple: they provide food on the weekends for school-aged children who might otherwise go hungry.
In Downers Grove, Blessings feeds 351 kids each week which is 53% of the eligible kids in the community. The organization has mobilized local support through community volunteers to pack and/or distribute food backpacks weekly at DG 58’s 13 elementary schools. Those volunteers not only pack but accept delivery and store food at their own houses to support the kids. The packing events create awareness not only in the schools but at local businesses as well. The local Downers Grove Blessings team is charged with raising funds to support buying the food that is packed every week. The support of the Downers Grove community is essential to raise the funds needed to feed kids. As always, thank you for caring
